Research

My analytical research interests include: the analysis of popular music, pitch-class set analysis and mathematical modelling of pitch.

This was an article I published in Ex Tempore’s 2009 Spring Summer issue on Smith Brindle’s “El Polifemo de Oro”.

This was the proposal for the presentation Melvin Backstrom and I gave at the November 2018 conference of the Society for Music Theory on the Grateful Dead’s “Blues for Allah”, including the abstract and supplementary diagrams.

Other recent analytical projects include: the analysis of the music of the ‘blues queens’ of the 1920s. Some of my work  can be viewed at my academia.edu page.

In terms of technological research, I am engaged with the development of signal processing applications for the electric guitar. Many of these can be heard here.
